Android TV is the best platform for IPTV, and it is not particularly close. It has full Play Store access so no sideloading is required, the hardware options run from budget sticks to genuinely powerful boxes, and the better devices include the one feature that matters most for high-bitrate streaming: an ethernet port.
It is also the platform where buying badly does the most damage. The market is full of unbranded boxes advertising specifications they do not have, and that is where most Android TV disappointment originates — not in the setup, which takes about four minutes.

Why Android TV beats a Firestick
We recommend Firesticks often, because they are cheap and they work. But if you are choosing fresh and IPTV is the main use, Android TV is the better platform for four concrete reasons.
There is no sideloading. Player apps install straight from the Play Store, which removes the entire developer-options and Downloader dance our Firestick guide has to walk through.
Many devices have ethernet. A wired connection removes wireless variability entirely, and for anyone streaming 4K or genuine 8K that matters more than any other single factor.
Memory is generally greater. Android boxes commonly ship with 2–4 GB against a Firestick's 1–2 GB, and programme guides are memory-hungry. And crucially, most Android boxes sit in open air rather than pressed against a hot television panel — which sidesteps the thermal throttling that causes so much Firestick buffering.

The cheap box problem
This section is the reason this article exists, because it is where people waste money and then blame their IPTV provider for the result.
Search any marketplace for "Android TV box" and you will find devices advertising 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage for less than a branded streaming stick. Those specifications are frequently fictional. The system reports whatever the manufacturer wrote into the firmware, and inflated figures are routine on grey-market hardware.
More importantly, these boxes are usually not Play Store certified. That means no security updates, no guaranteed app compatibility, and in the worst cases pre-installed software nobody asked for. Uncertified boxes have repeatedly been found shipping with adware or worse baked into the system image, which is not something you can uninstall.
Green flags
Play Store certified
Check for the "Works with Google TV" or Android TV branding. Certification means Google tested the device and it receives updates.
A brand with a support page
Nvidia, Google, Xiaomi, Walmart Onn. A company with a warranty process and firmware downloads is accountable in a way a marketplace seller is not.
Ethernet port
The single most valuable hardware feature for IPTV. Removes wireless from the equation entirely.
Realistic specifications
2–4 GB RAM at a plausible price. Genuine hardware is priced like genuine hardware.
Red flags
Impossible specifications for the price
8 GB RAM for £25 does not exist. The figure is written into firmware and reported to the system regardless of what is fitted.
No brand name, generic model number
Devices sold under a dozen names from one factory. No updates, no support, no accountability.
Pre-loaded with streaming apps
A box arriving with media apps already installed has been modified by someone between the factory and you.
Running an old Android version
Android 9 or earlier in 2026 means no security patches and growing app incompatibility.
Installing your player app
On a certified device this is genuinely trivial — the entire Firestick sideloading process is unnecessary.

Install from a phone if the TV keyboard is painful
On play.google.com, signed in with the same Google account, you can select your TV as the install target and the app installs remotely. Considerably faster than a remote-control keyboard.
If the app is not on the Play Store
Occasionally a specific player is unavailable in your region. The process then mirrors the Firestick approach: install Downloader from the Play Store, enable Install unknown apps for it under Settings → Apps → Special app access, then enter the download address supplied by support.

Identical to every other platform. Choose Login with Xtream Codes API and enter your username, password and server URL exactly as issued — including protocol and port, with no trailing slash. Pasting from a messaging app frequently appends an invisible space, which produces a misleading "invalid credentials" error.

Settings that matter on Android TV
EXO Player with hardware decoding
The most important setting on any Android device. EXO Player uses the dedicated video decoding hardware rather than the general-purpose CPU, which cuts processor load dramatically and eliminates most stutter. Set it for both live and VOD playback.
Disable animations
Under Settings → Device Preferences → About, tap the build number seven times to enable developer options. Then set window, transition and animator scales to 0.5× or off. The interface becomes noticeably more responsive, particularly on 2 GB devices.
Turn off unused background services
Uninstall or disable preinstalled apps you do not use. Every background service consumes memory that a programme guide needs, and Android TV devices ship with several nobody opens.
Set the display refresh rate to match content
Where the device offers automatic refresh rate switching, enable it. Matching the display to the source frame rate removes judder on panning shots, which is most visible during sport.
Ethernet: the single biggest upgrade
If your device has an ethernet port and you are using Wi-Fi, you are leaving the largest available improvement unclaimed.
Wi-Fi throughput fluctuates with interference, distance, walls and how many neighbours are streaming. Those fluctuations are exactly what adaptive bitrate has to compensate for, and they are why a connection that measures fast can still deliver an unstable stream. A wired connection removes the variability entirely.
For devices without a port — a Chromecast with Google TV, for instance — a USB-C ethernet adapter with pass-through power costs very little and works well. For anyone chasing genuine 8K bitrates it is effectively required, as covered in our 4K versus 8K guide.
If ethernet genuinely is not possible, connect explicitly to the 5 GHz band rather than letting the device choose. 2.4 GHz travels further but is slower and shares spectrum with every router and microwave in range.

Google TV vs Android TV: any difference?
Practically none, and the naming causes needless worry.
Google TV is an interface layer sitting on top of Android TV, emphasising content recommendations across services. Underneath it is the same operating system with the same Play Store and the same app compatibility. Every IPTV player that runs on Android TV runs on Google TV.
The only real inconvenience is that Google TV's home screen prioritises recommended content over your installed apps, and sideloaded apps can be awkward to find. Most players can be added to the favourites row, and a launcher replacement solves it entirely if the recommendation-heavy interface irritates you.
Getting the most from the platform
Buy a certified device with at least 2 GB of RAM and preferably an ethernet port. Install from the Play Store, log in with Xtream Codes, switch to EXO Player with hardware decoding, and plug in a cable. That sequence takes under five minutes and produces a setup that will outperform most people's television.
